Cleanings

Cleanings

Under 18:
We recommend children and teens have a cleaning twice a year. Typically we take x-rays once a year to check for decay and normal patterns of losing teeth. Sometimes we take x-rays more frequently during those teeth-losing years or if permanent teeth seem delayed in coming in. We also apply topical fluoride at least once a year to help prevent cavities. For most adults with healthy mouths, a cleaning every six months is often enough to keep teeth and gums healthy. Once a year your hygienist will take digital x-rays and perform a more thorough gum exam. At least once a year the doctor will examine teeth for decay and potential concerns.

Adults:
For adults with gum disease, cleanings are more involved. As we age, we’re all at increased risk of developing gum disease which is why we thoroughly check the gums at least once a year for regular patients and at the first visit for all new patients.

Gum Disease:
To treat gum disease in its early stages, one of our hygienists schedules 2-4 extended appointments to remove the bacteria that settles in pockets below the gumline and apply medication to treat the microbes that eat away at the bone. When left untreated, the bone that holds your teeth secure is compromised by bacteria and teeth become looser and looser until dentures become the only option—and without healthy bone under the gumline, those dentures tend to fit poorly. Our goal is to stabilize your gum disease so you can keep your natural teeth for life.

Gum disease doesn’t “go away” or fully heal once the bone has been affected, but with good habits at home and regular maintenance appointments in the office, we can help you stabilize your disease. Most patients in the maintenance phase need an appointment every 3-4 months in order to avoid a relapse. Occasionally we’ve seen patients with such fantastic homecare routines that visits can be moved to every six months without a relapse.
